Inspired by history: the art behind the new wallpaper collection!

There’s something timeless about the way Monika Lechner approaches pattern. Trained in Vienna and now based in Eindhoven, this surface pattern designer works where art history and modern design meet. Her style is rooted in tradition but never nostalgic. It blends storytelling richness of historical motifs with the crisp, intelligent clarity of Dutch Design.
Before diving fully into design, Monika spent years working with the digitization of cultural heritage — museum archives, old libraries, forgotten textile collections. It’s no wonder her creative eye is drawn to the dialogue between past and present. In her hands, Jugendstil curves and Art Deco geometry become fresh, graceful, and deeply contemporary.
Her Heritage Salon wallpaper collection began with a single floral damask “hero” motif — an anchor design that she then unraveled and reimagined into elegant companion patterns. The result is a cohesive visual story told through stripes, scrolls, and flourishes that seem to whisper of grand halls, heirloom fabrics, and forgotten tales. From regal unicorns to botanical brocades, every detail feels intentional, steeped in history yet alive with new meaning.

Monika’s own love story with wallpaper began, fittingly, at old home. She decided to learn how to hang wallpaper herself. “It was a bit of a battle,” she admits, “but once I saw that wall finished, I realized how powerfully a pattern can change a room and your mood!”. That experience sparked her belief that wallpaper is far more than surface decoration. It’s a way to connect with your surroundings, to express personality, and to write your own story across your walls. By the way, she luckily had some rolls of that yellow wallpaper left to use in her new house. For the sake of immediate joy whenever looking at it!
